Handheld GPS Reviews and Ratings - Buyers Guide

Handheld GPS’s are known of their compact and versatile designs. These devices are commonly used for hunting, hiking, camping and pretty much any activities that require navigation assistance. The features needed on a hiking unit are a bit different from an automobile GPS. The ideal portable navigation unit for obvious reasons needs to have a long lasting battery life, should be light and comfortable, sunlight readable screen, waterproof and not too expensive.

Here’s a list of the most important features to look for on the ideal handheld GPS Unit:

  • Way-points Capacity – The more the better. For example many Garmit systems come loaded with 1000 way-points while some older models store only have 500 way-points. It is recommended to have at least a 1000 way-points.
  • Internal Memory – Most of the newer portable GPS’s have an internal memory of at least 1GB+. But it is still a good idea to purchase a device with an expandable memory if you are planning on purchasing your own maps. All Garmit models with an “x” in their model name, feature expandable memory. Please note: Garmit does not allow a user to upload their own map or maps.
  • Automatic Routing Capabilities – There’s not much to explain here, if you went of track the GPS will easily and automatically re-route to your desired location.
  • Built in Electronic Compass (optional) – That’s if you need this info. Note: some older models can not determine which direction you’re facing unless you’re moving.
  • Altimeter (optional) – Depends on what you’re planning to use the device for. Useful to indicate altitude, of feet above see level.
Guide to Garmin model names: H – High Sensitivity chipset C – Color display S – Electronic compass and barometric altimeter x – Expandable memory via MicroSD Card In our opinion the ideal handheld GPS gadget you can be happy with and truly appreciate is the one that provides most or all of these features. But in the end it all comes down to your budget and personal preference.
